Are we becoming a drunk state?
Recent state arrest data shows that about 1,800 Ohioans have been arrested for a drunk driving offense 10 or more times. What makes this even scarier is that about two-thirds of Ohioans arrested for drunken driving are only charged once.
First-time offenders can either do a 3-day jail sentence, participate in a 3-day driver intervention program or have license suspended for 6-months. Judges can order lifetime offenses for repeat offenders.
With the rise in a drunk driving arrests have seen a correlation with drunk driving accidents. In 2015, 350 people were killed in an accident involving a driver with an OVI charge, and 8,140 were injured. Those numbers rosed to 430 killed and 8,672 injured in 2016.
